Àkànlò Èdè Yorùbá - Yoruba Language language Idiomatic Expressions

Àkànlò èdè jẹ́ àkójọpọ̀ ọ̀rọ̀ tí a máa ń lò fún ìtàkù ọ̀rọ̀ sọ eléyìí tí kò mú ìtumọ̀ dání láti inú àwọn tí ọ̀rọ̀ tí a kó jọpọ̀. Yorùbá máa ń lò kí ọ̀rọ̀ wọn lè ní ìkì nínú àti kí ó leè mú ọ̀rọ̀ sísọ dùn.

Idioms are group of words used by Yoruba to express express themselves, the meanings of which are not deductible from the literal meanings of those words. Idioms are used to make Yoruba sentences dynamic and make more of figurative.


Ìwọ̀nyí ni díẹ̀ nínú àkànlò èdè Yorùbá tó wà pẹ̀lú ìtumọ̀ wọn.

The following are few of the Yorùbá Idiomatic expressions with their meaning

1. Faraya - Kí ènìyàn bínú gidigidi. Tó bẹ extremely angry


2. Fárígá - Kọ̀ jálẹ̀ láti gbọ́ tàbí gbà. To remain unbent or unyielding to other people's persuasions on a controversial matter.


3. Ejò lọ́wọ́ nínú - Kí á fura sí ènìyàn nípa ìṣẹ̀lẹ̀ kan. To suspect someone of being a perpetrator of a particular act.


4. Ọba wàjà - kí ọba kú.

Death of a traditional King


5. Fi orí gbálẹ̀ - Kí ènìyàn máa ṣe gáń-gàǹ-gán. To act insanely.


6. Ní òkè mìíràn lẹ́yìn ọ̀run - Ní ìgbẹ́kẹ̀lé mìíràn ní ibòmíràn. Tó have other support than what people expect.


7. Wá wọ̀rọ̀kọ̀ fi s'àdá - láti wá ọ̀nà àbáyọ mìíràn bótilẹ̀ jẹ́ pé kò dára (pégba) tó. To seek other means of solving a problem even though it's not appropriate.


8. Ra ẹ̀kọ níbi tí agbọ̀n gbé ga - láti ṣe àṣejù tàbí kọjá ààyè. Tó dable into what is beyond one's means.


9. Júbà ehoro - kí ènìyàn sáré. Tó run extraordinarily


10. Fi ẹsẹ̀ fẹ - sálọ. To run away from trouble.


11. Fẹnu kọ - Kò sínú wàhálà nípa àì bìkítà ọ̀rọ̀ ẹnu. To run into trouble because of unguided utterances.


12. Fọ̀rọ̀ sábẹ́ ahọ́n - Láti má sọ tòótọ́ ọ̀rọ̀. To hide the truth.


13. Fara sinko - sá pamọ́. Tó hide away from being seen.


14. Gbégunnu - kí ènìyàn gọ̀. To be stupid.


15. Jáwé olú borí - ṣe àṣeyọrí. To be victorious in a contest.


16. Ẹyẹ ò sọkà - lẹ́sẹ̀ kẹsẹ̀. Instantly.


17. Fi òkò kan pa ẹyẹ méjì - kí á yanjú ǹkan méjì pọ̀ lẹ́ẹ̀kan náà. To sort two important issues out at once.


18. Sojú abẹ níkòó - kí á sọ bí ọ̀rọ̀ serí gan. To hit the nail on the head.


19. Bá òpó lọ sílé olóròó - Kí á fa ọ̀rọ̀ gùn. To beat about the bush.


20. Erín wó - kí ènìyàn kú. To die.


21. Òkété ti bórù - kí ọ̀rọ̀ má nìí àtúnṣe mọ́. When an issue is no longer resolvable.


22. Ìtì ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ ni, kòtó ohun à ń lọ̀ àdá bẹ́. A trivial or less difficult matter.


23. Gbẹ̀yìn bẹbọ jẹ́ - kí ènìyàn wùwà ọ̀dàlẹ̀ tàbí dalẹ̀ ọ̀rẹ́. To betray a trust or violate an allegiance.


24. Àgbàdo inú ìgò - ohun tí ọwọ́ ẹni kò ká. When something becomes unattainable or unachievable.


25. Fi ọwọ́ yẹpẹrẹ mú ọ̀rọ̀ - Kí ènìyàn má kọbi ara sí ọ̀rọ̀ tó ṣe pàtàkì. Tó handle an important matter with levity or to trivialise it.
